The Sisters of St. Benedict desired to implement a transformational redevelopment of its 34-acre site in Maplewood, MN by forging a partnership with non-profits CommonBond Communities and Tubman. This partnership maximizes the Sisters’ community impact – the care of children & the elderly, ministry to young mothers, healthcare, teaching, liturgy & prayer, while supporting their Monastic life.
The design and construction teams collaborated with the group to design a new monastery with housing and sacred worship space, while preserving the historic monastery for Tubman by dedicating its space as transitional housing and a resource center for women and families in crisis.
Following these changes, the team worked with CommonBond Communities to enhance the property and expand affordable housing options with Century Trails Senior Housing, a 40-unit HUD 202 subsidized senior housing community, and Trail’s Edge Townhomes, with 48 units for families with a playground and walking trail amenities.
Development includes:
- 50,000 sq. ft. New Monastery
- 100,000 sq. ft. Renovation of Existing Monastery for Transitional Housing & Resource Center
- 34,000 sq. ft., Affordable Senior Housing Development
- 82,545 sq. ft. Affordable Housing Townhome Development
