PrairieCare opened its youth psychiatric inpatient hospital in 2015, and quickly expanded to provide 71 beds and services for youth and young adults challenged with depression, anxiety, trauma and mood disorders. With legislative support, PrairieCare expanded the building to provide an additional 30 beds and therapy services.
With thoughtful planning and detailed design features, every moment and interaction for patients and providers is considered, from patient experiences in their private or shared bedrooms, to transitions to milieu spaces down corridors with large windows and views to the outdoors.
This project highlights the need and ability of spaces to be truly healing environments for patients and staff. Everything from the use of light, materials, landscaping, access, and security were all integrated to promote wellness. This is a space that people want to come to, feel safe, and prioritize their mental and physical well-being.
