Snelling Yards Affordable Apartments Move Ahead

Thursday, June 15th, 2023

Lupe Development Partners and Wall Companies are moving forward with the next phase of Snelling Yards, an intergenerational campus that redevelops the City of Minneapolis’ former public works site.

Finance & Commerce reported on the news. This second phase will add 90 affordable apartments to the site at 45th Street and Hiawatha Avenue in Minneapolis.

Phase 1, Ecumen’s The Hillock which opened in December, is a fully-leased 100-unit affordable senior housing apartment building. Together, these apartments help meet this area’s critical need for quality affordable housing.

Hennepin County recently awarded the affordable apartments project $900,000 in funding through its Affordable Housing Incentive Fund program, which funds the development of affordable housing units for “very low-income households.

“We know there’s absence of affordable apartment communities with ample space for larger families and Snelling Yards is an excellent solution to that in the heart of the city. The investment from Hennepin County is an encouraging sign that allows this project to move forward. We’re ready to seize this moment and deliver on our vision to create a multigenerational community at Snelling Yards,” said John Wall, president of Wall Companies.

The intergenerational approach allows aging seniors, entry-level workforce, and working family residents an opportunity to remain and thrive in their neighborhood with quality housing. This site is an ideal location for an intergenerational community due to its proximity to transit, jobs, retail and services.
