Staff from Pope Architects visited the newly expanded Bielenberg Sports Center in Woodbury, MN.

Construction at Bielenberg Sports Center is nearing completion, and our office took the opportunity to check out the progress. The new 90,000 sq. ft. field house sits on the same site as the old field house. A 20,000 sq. ft. lobby was built to link the existing ice rinks to the new field house.

The new permanent structure doubles the size of the facility and fits a full sized football field. The huge 3-inch thick, floor to ceiling windows on either end of the field house let in plenty of natural light, making the space feel very spacious.

The turf field allows for a variety of sports including, football, soccer, baseball, softball and lacrosse, to be played year round. Minnesota United FC has partnered with the City of Woodbury and is building a training center adjacent to the field house.

Staff explored the field house and got to see behind-the-scenes, including the extensive geothermal technology heating and cooling the space. In addition, the group also had the chance to explore the new lobby areas, updated ice rinks and see the inner workings of the outdoor ice rink.

Stay tuned for the City’s grand opening event on September 16, 2014.
