Hamm’s Redevelopment: Art in the Hollow & Community Engagement

Thursday, June 13th, 2024

Earlier this month, the development team for the Hamm’s Brewery Redevelopment site on St. Paul’s East Side engaged the community at the Art in the Hollow event in Swede Hollow Park.

Hamm’s Brewery was at one time the heart of St. Paul’s East Side. The site stopped operating as a brewery in 1997 and has since been mostly vacant or housed a few smaller businesses.

In 2023, The City of St. Paul selected local developer JB Vang to redevelop the 4.8-acre site. Since early 2024 over several community workshops, the development team has listened to the neighborhood to prioritize diverse multicultural community values in the planning and vision for this project. This engagement included participating in the Art in the Hollow event held on June 1. Pope Design Group is an honored partner in this important redevelopment project striving to bring more affordable housing, business opportunities and community gathering spaces to this area of Saint Paul.

JB Vang’s vision revitalizes the site to serve as a hub of community activity. Plans include 157 family-friendly affordable apartments, 89 artist lofts, five ownership live-work studios, six ownership Row Houses, ample green space, outdoor programming space for community gathering, and trail connections that create a passageway from Swede Hollow Park, all while preserving the historic and cultural significance of the site.
