Groundbreaking for Wadaag Commons in Minneapolis’ Seward Neighborhood

Thursday, July 11th, 2024

Last week, Noor Companies and Redesign, Inc. hosted a groundbreaking celebration for Wadaag Commons in the Seward neighborhood. This is the final piece of the Seward Commons development in the community affected by the civil unrest following George Floyd’s murder.

“Wadaag” means “sharing” or “community” in Somali. Wadaag Commons is a transformative 39-unit housing development that will offer much-needed affordable one- to four-bedroom units in Minneapolis’ diverse Seward neighborhood.

The groundbreaking was well attended with speeches from Representative Ilhan Omar, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, Minnesota Housing Commissioner Jennifer Ho and Dominic Mitchell with the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority. Pope Design Group’s Project Manager Kate Blum-Wise also shared a few words about the positive impact of this project for the community.

Wadaag Commons will be a transformative 39-unit housing development that will offer much-needed affordable one- to four-bedroom units in Minneapolis’ Seward neighborhood. Four one-bedroom units will serve high priority homeless households, five one- and two-bedroom units will serve people with disabilities, and 24 units will accommodate Project Based Vouchers from the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority. The remaining six units will serve households at 60% of area median income.

With a focus on sustainable, healthy, culturally competent design, this project is part of the larger Seward Commons project and will provide much needed affordable housing to the diverse South Minneapolis community.
