2021 NAIOP Awards: Shakopee VA Clinic

Thursday, September 23rd, 2021

Congrats to all of this year’s NAIOP Awards of Excellence nominees and honorees. We join our client and project team in celebrating winning the AOE honor for Shakopee VA Clinic.

The NAIOP Minnesota Awards of Excellence celebrates commercial real estate in Minnesota by selecting exceptional developments in diverse industries. Judges toured (virtually) each nomination and evaluated them on project development, function and design, architectural integrity, market feasibility, sustainable attributes and unique project challenges.

Shakopee Veteran Affairs Clinic

The new Shakopee Veterans Affairs (VA) Clinic is a free-standing clinic providing convenient healthcare services for local Veterans, fulfilling the VA’s mission of providing Veterans readily accessible care close to home. The location eliminates the stress of travel and wayfinding to the VA Medical Center by bringing all aspects of a patient’s health right to their community.

To ensure Veterans can receive holistic care, the clinic offers primary care, mental health services with both on-site staff and telemedicine, tele-heathcare, radiology and imaging, EKGs, pharmacy management, dietetics, group therapy and health education.

The clinic is owned by SDA, a Denver-based developer, who worked with the Minneapolis VA Health Care System to select the comprehensive design and construction team. Sited near an existing elementary school and daycare, this project is the first piece of a larger development that includes a medical office building and market-rate apartments. The team worked closely with the developer of the adjacent projects and the City of Shakopee to ensure efficiency in site design and building access.

Designed to meet the Green Building Initiative’s Green Globes certification, the project includes maximized daylight, views to the outdoors, integration of natural materials, preventing indoor air pollutants, envelope that controls moisture and infiltration, and zoning and controls for individual user comfort levels. Ample daylight and spacious waiting and treatment areas support mobility and comfort of Veteran patients and their families.
