Historic Pioneer-Endicott Buildings will be transformed into modern apartment complex.

Construction has begun on the conversion of the Pioneer-Endicott Buildings in downtown St. Paul.

Pak Properties purchased the three-building complex and adjacent parking ramp in 2011 with plans to convert the complex into market-rate housing.

A LITTLE HISTORY LESSON — Built in 1989, the Pioneer Press Building was the first skyscraper ever built in Minnesota.  It was designed with a dramatic interior light court surrounded with offices. The building sported the first glass elevator in the nation and is known to still be the fastest elevator in the state.  Designed by Cass Gilbert, the two Endicott Buildings were built in 1890.  Both buildings are six stories and form an L-shape around the Pioneer Press building.  In 1983, the Endicott Buildings were restored to their original Renaissance Revival style.  The Pioneer-Endicott complex was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
