Edina City Council Approves New Senior Cooperative

Monday, October 17th, 2022

A redevelopment of a former Edina public works site is kicking off with a new 86-unit senior housing cooperative developed by United Properties. Future plans include an elevated pizza concept restaurant, and a public park/plaza.

Edina City Council recently approved the preliminary rezoning for the site at at 5146 Eden Ave in Edina, MN, allowing for the crafting of concrete architecture plans and marketing for the senior cooperative units to begin. United Properties is leading the redevelopment as senior housing developer in partnership with restaurant operator Jester Concepts.

The senior housing development will be the first phase of the project, including a six-story owner-occupied building, with ten percent of the units being affordable. This is the first development the city has seen in recent years that has the combination of these three aspects — multifamily and owner-occupied with affordable housing. There will also be over 140 parking spaces constructed for residents.

The units will have two bedrooms and range from 1,275 to 1,725 sq. ft., some with dens or sunrooms. Amenities in the building will include a great room, library, rooftop deck, fitness center, hobby shop, craft room, and more.

The restaurant that will be in the second phase of the development, will need further approval from the City Council. This will likely incorporate an “elevated pizza concept,” craft cocktail program, and wine list, with a private event space included on the top floor.

According to the city’s staff report on the project, the restaurant will attract people to the area and the proposal will create a more creative and efficient use of the property. The park will include a community gathering space and pedestrian paths.
